Scientists with mouse breeding programmes will again be able to communicate with their contact technicians

AEM continues to operate with a reduced staff focusing on husbandry and care of the animals.

After three week’s lockdown we are accumulating a backlog of tasks related to the maintenance of the many inbred mouse strains.

The standby-mode introduced in mid-March included culling of offspring at the time of weaning of productive strains, and maintenance of offspring from critical vulnerable strains. In numerous subsequent communications with AEM’s veterinarians it became obvious that mistakes could easily be made and consequently, from 20 March onwards, I instructed that all weaned offspring from all strains should be maintained in the units.

After three weeks, we now see it as critical – from a 3Rs point of view – to re-establish communication between the animal technicians and the researchers to ensure that we can get the breeding programmes back on track.

Consequently, scientists with mouse breeding programmes will again be able to communicate with their contact technicians from 18 April, just after Easter. I urge you to recognize that the technicians will be very busy in the initial phase, so please be patient and wait for the technicians to contact you.

Happy Easter
